Do I need a common wire for a smart thermostat in my home?
Often, yes. Many homes here went up between 1970 and 1999 and were wired without a 24 volt common wire. We read the existing run first. If there is no common wire, we pull new wire, repurpose a spare conductor, or fit an approved adapter.
Can I buy my own thermostat and have you install it?
Yes. We install units homeowners supply, and we check compatibility before we start. A model bought online may not support heat pump staging or two stage equipment, so we confirm it matches your system and tell you if it will not work.
Why does my heat pump run backup heat during a cold snap?
Usually staging. Winters here are short and mild with occasional hard freezes, so electric backup heat should be rare. When the auxiliary terminals are wired or configured wrong, the system calls that backup heat while the compressor could still carry the load.
How long does a thermostat installation take?
Most swaps take about an hour. Older wiring takes longer. If we need to run a new common wire from the air handler, plan on part of a day. We quote that wiring work upfront, so the price does not move once the wall plate comes off.
