AC Repair in Live Oak, TX

When an air conditioner quits in a Live Oak summer, the first question we answer is what refrigerant it runs on. The median Live Oak home was built in 1990, which means much of this equipment started life on R-22, and that changes the math on any refrigerant related failure. Smart Choice Heating and Cooling repairs air conditioning throughout Live Oak, TX with NATE certified technicians dispatched from our shop about 8 miles away. We are family owned, licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, TACLB 103516E, and available 24/7.

We repair every major brand of air conditioning equipment, Amana, Goodman, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and Rheem, including the R-22 systems still cooling homes across Live Oak and the northeast corridor.

We identify the refrigerant and the age of the system before we quote anything, because on equipment from around 1990 those two facts drive the whole decision.

Why the label on the data plate changes the conversation

Live Oak’s housing carries a median construction year of 1990. Cooling equipment sold into houses of that vintage ran on R-22, and while a great deal of it has been changed out across the decades since, we still pull a panel here and find the original refrigerant printed on the plate. That one label says more about the economics of a repair than the cabinet’s condition does.

What changed is the supply behind the label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that production and import of HCFC-22 in this country stopped on January 1, 2020, that used HCFC-22 cleaned to the same specification as new refrigerant is still available, and that an existing system may still be serviced, in its guidance for homeowners and consumers. The agency does not call the refrigerant scarce or costly, and we will not put that in its mouth. What we will say, from our own invoices, is that a pool refilled only by recovery does not behave the way an open one does.

So a single fault can carry two answers. A slow leak on a system running current refrigerant is a repair: locate it, fix it, recharge, move on. The same leak on an R-22 machine means buying from that recovered pool to refill a circuit that has already shown it will not hold, and buying again when it lets go again. Where the failure is larger, a compressor or an evaporator coil, the sheer volume of refrigerant involved can outweigh what the repair buys in seasons.

That is why the plate comes before the price book on every no cooling call here. Refrigerant type and manufacture date decide whether we are quoting a fix or opening a much larger conversation, and once we know, you get both figures at once with a plain account of what each choice buys in seasons. The decision stays yours, and a properly repaired R-22 machine is a legitimate answer.

What we do about it

We chase the leak instead of feeding it. Topping a system off buys weeks. An AC repair visit locates where the charge is escaping, because on this equipment the second recharge costs more than finding the hole would have.

We watch the charge across seasons rather than on one afternoon. An annual AC tune-up logs pressures and coil condition every spring, which turns a July surprise into months of warning in a house where surprises are expensive.

We size a replacement to the house, not to the old plate. When the numbers point that way, new equipment gets a load calculation, a matched coil and a line set we have inspected, because a floor plan from 1990 was drawn around different assumptions.

We rule out the attic before condemning a compressor. Leaking runs overhead draw hot air into the return and make sound equipment look undersized, so duct sealing gets checked first. Questions ahead of a visit can come through our contact page.

What Live Oak homeowners tell us

A failed coil replaced and the charge restored

An evaporator coil failure forces the repair or replace question by itself: the coil comes out, the refrigerant goes with it, and the circuit has to be filled again. Karen’s visit covered all of that in one trip, including a UV light mounted where it was doing little good.

“Alonzo replaced a bad evaporator coil, recharged the system, relocated the UV light to a more suitable location, and got my AC up in running in record time. Very thorough, knowledgeable, friendly and professional service. I highly recommend Smart Choice Heating and Cooling, and will definitely call them again when needed. A+”

Coil work rewards a technician who finishes the job rather than the ticket. Karen names the coil, the recharge and the relocation, which is what a complete visit looks like from our side too.

A second opinion on equipment worth keeping

Not every quote a homeowner receives survives a second look. Randall had already replaced both of his systems, one of them brand new, when another company still pushed a full replacement.

“They came and save us a ton of money! We had another company come by and they were trying to sell us $5000 unit and we just replaced both of our systems and one was brand new. Javier helped us and thank you for looking out for people first.”

Nobody should be sold hardware they already own. We quote the fix and the changeout together for exactly this reason, and when a changeout is not warranted we say so.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Signs You Need AC Repair

Warm Air at the Vents

Air that never turns cold is usually charge loss, and on an R-22 system that answer costs more.

Ice on the Coil

A frozen indoor coil points to low refrigerant or to airflow starved by a restricted filter.

Refrigerant Leaks

A leak on an R-22 system means buying reclaimed stock to refill equipment that leaks again.

Short Cycling

Starting and stopping every few minutes signals low charge, a bad control, or oversized equipment.

Strange Noises

Grinding, screeching, or a hard start means a motor or a compressor bearing is on its way out.

Rising Energy Bills

Cooling costs climbing with no change in the weather mean the system is losing efficiency.

REPAIR OR REPLACE

Repair or Replace? We Show You Both Numbers

Repair if:

The system runs R-410A, the failure is one component, and the coil and the compressor test sound. A repair that buys several more seasons is worth making.

Consider replacement if:

The system runs R-22 and the failure involves refrigerant. Since January 1 2020, no new R-22 has been produced or imported in the United States, so every pound now comes from recovered and reclaimed stock. Refilling a system that leaks once, then leaks again, adds up against equipment that runs on current refrigerant.

OUR PROCESS

Our AC Repair Process

1

Real appointment windows

We give you a window we can keep and we call before we roll, so nobody in Live Oak loses a day waiting on a truck.

2

Refrigerant and age check first

Before we quote we read the data plate for refrigerant type and age, then measure charge, temperature split, amp draw, and capacitor values and inspect the coil and drain path. On a home near the 1990 build year that step decides the conversation, because R-22 work prices out differently. Readings go to you in writing.

3

Both numbers, plain English

We show you the failed part, price the repair, and price the replacement next to it, then let you choose without a sales push.

4

Repair done right, mess cleaned up

We finish the work, verify the system is cooling to spec before we leave, and take the old parts and the packaging with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you really cover Live Oak?

Yes. Live Oak sits about 8 miles from our shop, one of the closest cities we serve, and we dispatch 24 hours a day, so same day arrival is normal.

My system uses R-22. Can you service it?

Yes. An existing R-22 system can still be serviced, and reclaimed supply remains available. The caveat is that every pound now comes from recovered stock.

Should I repair or replace my AC?

That depends on the refrigerant, the age, and the failed part. We price both, show what each buys in service life, and leave the choice with you.

How much does AC repair cost?

It depends on what the diagnostic finds. We quote before the work begins and list each recommendation separately, so you can approve some and defer others.

Do you handle after hours calls?

Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, and we dispatch the same night on a no cooling call in summer.
