AC Repair and Service in Kirby, TX

Kirby sits on the east side of Bexar County, hemmed in by San Antonio, about 7 miles from our shop. Smart Choice Heating and Cooling repairs cooling systems here every week, and we work the way this city warrants: we test first, then we show you the readings. The median home here was built in 1978, so repair or replace is a real question rather than a script. We are family owned, licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, TACLB 103516E, with NATE certified technicians available 24/7.

We repair every major brand of air conditioning equipment, Amana, Goodman, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, and more, in Kirby homes where the system is often close to the age of the 1978 house around it.

Replacement is a large number beside a home valued at 165,500 dollars, so the diagnosis has to be right. Every visit includes pressures, amp draw and static pressure.

Why the diagnosis matters more here than the repair does

The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts profile for Kirby city, Texas puts median household income at 55,532 dollars and the median value of an owner occupied home at 165,500 dollars for 2020 through 2024. The county figures are 72,341 and 262,200. Households here earn roughly a quarter less than Bexar County as a whole, and the house is worth close to 100,000 dollars less.

Set a replacement quote next to those two numbers. Whatever it comes to, it takes a larger bite out of this house than out of the county median home, and a larger share of a year of earnings. That does not make the purchase wrong. It makes it worth being certain about.

The failure mode is a wrong call in either direction. Condemn equipment with four good seasons left, and a household spends money it had earmarked for something else. Patch a system that is finished, and that household pays twice, once for the part and again for the unit a few months later. Both errors come from recommending by looking instead of testing.

Age makes the mistake easier. Most of this housing stock went up in the late 1970s, so anyone working from nameplates would write off nearly every system in town. We read the machine instead, and we hand you the readings.

How we work a repair or replace call here

We diagnose before we quote. An AC repair visit starts with meters on the equipment and ends with the numbers in front of you, so the recommendation carries evidence, not an opinion about the age of the unit.

We size to the house, not to the old sticker. When AC installation is the better value, we measure the building the way it stands today. Equipment matched to a 1970s nameplate inherits whatever was wrong then.

We would rather find a fault early than sell you out of one. A seasonal tune-up catches a tired capacitor in April, while it is still a scheduled part and not a July decision made in a hot house. A maintenance plan keeps that history attached to the system.

We answer at the hour things break. Cooling quits on the worst afternoon of the year, so emergency service runs around the clock. Describe the symptom through our contact page and we arrive carrying what it points to.

What Kirby homeowners tell us

A septic line left exactly where it was

Ashley’s job carried a complication few homeowners think to ask about, a septic line running through the work area. Alonzo’s crew routed around it, stayed past quitting time, and settled the money with the family first.

“Alonzo and his team were amazing!
Alonzo was very knowledgeable and explained everything they needed to do and what they did. They went above and beyond when they didn’t have to move my septic line for safety purposes and stayed longer than they had to. Alonzo also helped my family and me ensure our HVAC was affordable and they could get to us ASAP. I Highly recommend.”

Leaving that line alone kept a second repair bill off the table. Agreeing the number first kept the rest of it predictable.

A blockage found instead of a furnace sold

Marco called because his heat would not fire while cooling ran fine. That visit could have ended in a quote for new equipment.

“…Justin arrived and looked over inside furnace heater and outside AC unit to seek answers to why wasn’t working. He established indeed AC was working and cooling and issue were just furnace heater not firing up. He took off panels to see internal working and was able to determine the system may have heated up but turned off from overheating. Justin changed out filter and adjusted inner wires but still system wouldn’t fire. He then made contact with supervisor who turned out to be Alonso who in tandem with Justin was able to discover there was something blocking the rotation of a part that prevented the proper rotation of mechanical system to start furnace heater. Once removed this blockage the system fired right up with mo further issues. From start to finish professional work and look forward to maintenance agreement with this organization.”

A blockage cleared was the least expensive outcome available that day. Two technicians kept looking until they found it.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Signs You Need AC Repair

Blowing Warm Air

No cold air at any vent narrows to the compressor, the charge or a control, and we test which.

Strange Noises

Screeching, grinding or a labored start tells us which bearing, motor or contactor to test.

Repeat Breakdowns

Three repairs in two seasons on a late 1970s system changes the math on replacement.

Long Runtimes

A system running all afternoon without holding setpoint is losing capacity or air.

High Energy Bills

Costs climbing on the same thermostat setting trace to duct leakage or a tired compressor.

Uneven Rooms

Ductwork as old as a 1978 house delivers less air to the far end of the floor plan.

REPAIR OR REPLACE

Repair or Replace? We Show You Both Numbers

Repair if:

The part is available, our readings show the system has years left, and the repair costs a fraction of replacement. You approve that written price first.

Consider replacement if:

The system is past 15 years, uses R-22, or has needed several repairs in two seasons. We size replacements off a load calculation for the house as it stands, not the tonnage on a decades old nameplate, and financing spreads the cost across months so the timing stays your decision.

OUR PROCESS

Our AC Repair Process

1

Real appointment windows

We give you a window we can keep and call before we roll. Kirby is about 7 miles out, so a no cooling call usually gets same day attention, at any hour.

2

Complete diagnostic, measured

We check charge, electrical, drainage and controls, then measure static pressure and temperature split. That step decides everything here. On equipment of this vintage the meters are what separate a system with seasons left from one that is finished, and guessing costs a household real money either way.

3

Repair and replacement, side by side

You get the repair price in writing with the replacement figure next to it, what the repair buys in remaining years, and financing terms. Nothing starts until you approve.

4

Repair done right, mess cleaned up

We finish the work, verify airflow and temperature split, leave the area clean, and tell you what is trending toward its next failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you really cover Kirby?

Yes. Kirby is about 7 miles from our shop off Perrin Beitel, an easy run around Loop 410. We answer calls 24/7 and reach most no cooling calls the same day.

How much does AC repair cost?

We diagnose first, then hand you a written price to approve before work starts. Cost tracks the failed part and the system, and the replacement number sits beside it.

Do you offer financing?

We do, on repairs and on replacements. Financing spreads the cost across months instead of one week, which often decides which option makes better sense for a household.

Is a system this old worth repairing?

Often yes. Age alone does not condemn a system. We measure capacity and wear, then tell you what the repair buys in remaining years so you can weigh it against new equipment.

Do you offer after hours service?

We do. Our line is answered around the clock, and no cooling in a Kirby July is an emergency. We tell you what an after hours visit costs before we come out.
